Chronic disease stakeholders convene to workshop priorities for NCD leadership ahead of High Level Meeting

8 November 2024

Building momentum for Australian leadership and action ahead of the fourth UN High Level Meeting on NCDs and Mental Health' in September 2025 was the focus of an energising workshop in Canberra last week.

The NCD Leadership Workshop, co-hosted by The George Institute for Global Health, the Australian Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance (ACDPA), and the Australian Global Health Alliance, brought together around 50 representatives from civil society, government, academia, lived experience, and other community sectors from Australia and the Indo-Pacific region.

Australia’s Ambassador for Global Health, Dr. Lucas de Toca, opened the workshop with powerful remarks on the crucial role of civil society in driving action to reduce the impact of chronic diseases both nationally and internationally.

Australia is recognised as a leader in preventing and managing NCDs, both domestically and through partnerships with other countries. However, significant work remains to meet global commitments to improve health outcomes and reduce mortality from NCDs, with a particular need to improve health equity in Australia and internationally.

The workshop underscored the importance of collaboration, the interconnectedness of our world, and the opportunities multilateral discussions and processes provide for catalysing and supporting action and progress.

A heartfelt thank you to all participants, who exemplified themes of generosity, collaboration, leading and learning, including our fantastic panel of speakers, table rapporteurs, and everyone working behind the scenes to make this event a success.

We are digesting the rich discussions and emerging priorities, and plan to publish an event report in early-2025 as the next collective contribution to preparations toward the High-Level Meeting on NCDs and Mental Health.

This is only the beginning of preparations, and we look forward to sharing the journey with even more of Australia's chronic conditions community to make the most of 2025 and beyond as we #ActOnNCDs together.
